Ella

Sri Lanka's Scenic Mountain Paradise

About Ella

Ella is a small mountain village at 1,041 metres, surrounded by emerald tea plantations, jungle-clad ridges, and a famous gap in the hills that frames a view stretching all the way to the south coast on a clear day. Once a quiet rest stop, Ella has grown into one of Sri Lanka's most beloved destinations — a place where travellers slow down, hike between guesthouses, and watch the morning mist roll through the valley from a café veranda.

The Nine Arch Bridge — a colonial-era viaduct built entirely of brick and stone without a single steel beam — has become one of the most photographed sights in Asia. Sit with a tea at the viewpoint and wait for the blue train to cross. Little Adam's Peak, a two-hour trail through tea estates, delivers sweeping 360° views. Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave add layers of mythology and beauty. Ella is best reached by the famous scenic train from Kandy — a six-hour journey through some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery.
