Sigiriya

The Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World

About Sigiriya

Rising 200 metres above the jungle plain, Sigiriya is arguably the most dramatic sight in all of Sri Lanka — a 5th-century royal palace and fortress carved into the summit of a single great rock. King Kashyapa I chose this extraordinary natural citadel as his royal residence around 477 AD, constructing elaborate water gardens, terraced pathways, and a throne room at the very top, reached through the open jaws of a giant lion carved in brick.

Today, UNESCO recognises Sigiriya as a World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning on earth. The climb passes the famous frescoed maidens — vivid paintings of apsaras preserved in a sheltered rock pocket for 1,500 years — and the polished Mirror Wall, where ancient visitors scratched poetry about the paintings they had seen. At the top, the foundations of the royal palace and its swimming pool still stand, with views stretching to the horizon in every direction.
