Minneriya Safari

Home of the World's Largest Elephant Gathering

About Minneriya Safari

Minneriya National Park in the North Central Province is home to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth: "The Gathering" — a seasonal congregation of wild elephants around the Minneriya Tank (reservoir) between July and October. When the surrounding dry zone grasslands shrivel in the dry season, elephants from across the region converge on the lush grass that appears as the tank water level drops, forming herds of up to 300 animals in a single location.

The Gathering is recognised as the largest congregation of Asian elephants in the world. Safari jeeps navigate the edges of the tank as the elephants spread across the receding waterline — bulls sparring, matriarch herds moving in formation, calves learning to feed. Beyond the elephants, Minneriya also has toque macaque, fishing cats, endemic birds, and large flocks of painted storks that nest in the park.
