A well-balanced escape covering elephant orphanages, the rock fortress, Kandyan culture, scenic hill country, and the beautiful southern coastline.
This itinerary covers Sri Lanka's most beloved highlights in a well-paced, comfortable eight days — ideal for first-time visitors who want variety without rushing.
Colombo Airport → Pinnawala → Sigiriya
Your driver meets you at the airport and stops at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage en route north — watch Sri Lanka's rescued elephants bathe in the Maha Oya River. Continue to Sigiriya for the night.
A full morning to climb Sigiriya — the ancient 5th-century rock palace with its frescoed maidens, mirror wall inscriptions, and extraordinary views over the jungle plain. Optional: climb nearby Pidurangala Rock at sunset for a different perspective.
Dambulla → Kandy
Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple before descending to Kandy, the cultural capital and last home of Sri Lanka's royal court. Evening visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Morning at the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — 60 hectares of tropical palms, orchids, and giant bamboo, one of Asia's finest botanical gardens. Evening Kandyan dance performance with traditional drumming and fire-walking.
Kandy → Nuwara Eliya
Drive up into the misty highlands — through tea estates that cover every slope — to Nuwara Eliya at 1,868 metres. Tour a working tea factory, walk around Gregory Lake, and breathe the cool highland air.
Nuwara Eliya → South Coast
A scenic drive down from the highlands through tea country and the lowland plains to the south coast. Arrive at your beach hotel in time for sunset.
A full, unhurried day on the beach — swim, explore the reef, or simply relax beneath the palms. Optional: whale watching at Mirissa (November—April) or a sunset surf lesson.
Galle → Colombo
Morning walk through Galle Fort's UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial streets — the lighthouse, the ramparts, the old Dutch church — before transferring to Colombo for your international departure.
