Crystal Bays on Sri Lanka's East Coast
The coastline around Trincomalee on Sri Lanka's north-east is home to some of the finest beaches on the island — less visited than the south coast but with calmer seas and exceptional clarity. Nilaveli, 16 km north of Trincomalee town, is the most famous: a long arc of white sand backed by coconut palms, with turquoise water shallow enough to wade far from shore. Pigeon Island, just off Nilaveli, is one of the best snorkelling spots in the country with healthy coral and blacktip reef sharks.
Uppuveli, 6 km north of Trincomalee town, is slightly more developed with a cluster of guesthouses and beach restaurants — popular with travellers looking for a quieter alternative to the busy south coast. The east coast season runs from April to September, when the sea is at its calmest and the sky at its clearest.
Nilaveli Beach
One of Sri Lanka's longest and least crowded white-sand beaches — perfect swimming, shallow warm water, and spectacular sunsets.
Pigeon Island Snorkelling
The best accessible coral reef in Sri Lanka — blacktip reef sharks, turtles, and colourful reef fish in crystal-clear water.
Whale Watching
The waters off Trincomalee are among the best in the world for blue whale sightings — peak season March to April.
Best Time to Visit
April to September — the east coast dry season. The beaches are closed October to March when north-east monsoon swells make swimming dangerous.
Getting There
Trincomalee is approximately 6 hours from Colombo by road or 5 hours from Kandy via the hill country.
