The Jewel of Sri Lanka's East Coast
Trincomalee is built around one of the world's finest natural deep-water harbours — a bay so strategic it was described by Napoleon as the most valuable harbour in the east. The Dutch, Portuguese, British, and Chola kings of South India all coveted and occupied it at different times. Today, the city is a quiet and charming mix of Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim communities, with a string of beautiful beaches and one of Sri Lanka's most dramatically situated temples.
The Koneswaram Kovil — a Hindu temple perched on Swami Rock, a 130-metre cliff above the sea — is the centrepiece of the city. The view from the cliff edge, looking down into the turquoise harbour, is one of the most striking in Sri Lanka. Offshore, Pigeon Island National Park protects the island's best remaining coral reef — home to blacktip reef sharks, green sea turtles, and hundreds of fish species in crystal-clear water. The east coast season runs April to September, when the seas are calm and the beaches are some of the least-visited and most beautiful in the country.
Koneswaram Kovil
A dramatic clifftop Hindu temple at Swami Rock — 130 metres above the sea, with views over the entire bay.
Pigeon Island
Sri Lanka's best coral reef — snorkel with blacktip reef sharks and green turtles in waters of extraordinary clarity.
Marble Beach
One of Sri Lanka's finest beaches — a 2 km arc of white sand on a quiet bay south of the city, usually uncrowded.
Hot Springs at Kanniya
A set of freshwater hot springs used for Hindu ritual bathing, just outside the city — a quirky and genuine local experience.
Fort Frederick
A Portuguese-built fort later expanded by the Dutch and British — inside its walls stands the entrance to the Koneswaram Kovil.
Best Time to Visit
April to September — the east coast monsoon reverses in October, making the seas rough. This is when the west coast is in its dry season.
Getting There
Approximately 6 hours by road from Colombo. Domestic flights are available. Many visitors combine Trincomalee with Anuradhapura (2 hours) or Sigiriya (3 hours).
